Veronika Portsmuth is a creative conductor, teacher, and versatile musician with a doctorate from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre under the mentorship of world-class experts. With a career spanning choral conducting, contemporary music, and education, she has made a profound impact on Estonia’s music scene and beyond.

As a conductor, Veronika has led prestigious choirs such as The Estonian Concert Choir and The Mixed Choir of the European Capital of Culture. Also her passion for Nordic music inspired collaborations that introduced contemporary works to wider audiences, including the acclaimed staging of Helena Tulve’s chamber opera «It Is Getting So Dark».

Veronika has graduated from the doctoral program of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater (2014, supervised by professor Tõnu Kaljuste, associate professor Kerri Kotta and associate professor Allan Vurma). In addition to the artistic and practical guidance of various choirs, Veronika contributes to the development of choral and contemporary music more broadly as a teacher and mentor, leading the work of various organizations and associations in the field of choral music; directing and performing vocal solo projects.

She has also completed the teacher training program of the EMTA, graduated in classical singing from G.Ots Tallinn School of Music (2004, teacher Mare Jõgeva) and in choral conducting of the one-year post-master’s program at the Royal Stockholm Academy of Music (2009, tutor Anders Eby). Also she improved her orchestral conducting in the class of Jüri Alperten, Cecilia Rydinger Alin and Michael Bartoch and participated in the master classes of Eri Klas, Filippo Maria Bressan, Bo Johansson and Frieder Bernius.

Since 2010, she has been working as a mentor in the choral conducting department of EMTA and guides EMTA choral ensembles.

eronika is the chief conductor and artistic director of the Mixed Choir of the European Capital of Culture, the Chamber Women’s Choir Miina and the Women’s Choir Vero Vocale. She has also conducted the Estonian Concert Choir, the Women’s Choir of the Academy of Sciences, the Tallinn Chamber Choir, the Tallinn University of Technology Chamber Choir, the Nargen Opera Choir, the Tallinn Music High School Chamber Choir and the Boys’ Choir, etc.

Since 2005, Veronika Portsmuth has been involved in organizing and leading singing parties, guiding the choirs both at the 2007 youth singing party «Ilmapuu» and at the 2009 general singing party «Ühingamine».

In February 2014, she staged Helena Tulve’s chamber opera «It Is Getting So Dark», which was nominated for the Estonian Theater Awards Musical Performance Award.

Veronika is an owner of the Estonian Cultural Foundation’s Folk Culture Award and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Cultural Award.

In cooperation with Märt Agu, Veronika won the 2011 youth song and dance festival idea competition and was chosen as the artistic director of the song festival «Earth and Weather». At the party, Veronika Portsmuth led both the mixed choir and the joint choir.

In addition to singing parties, she has conducted choirs at several all-Estonian singing days and celebrations of various musical styles, e.g. Punk Song Party and Tartu Pop Choir Party.
